THOUGHT FOR THE DAY by Jim McDonald.....March 11, 2010....AM I LISTENING...In Bible study one evening, the participants were asked to listen while one person in the group read this passage aloud. "Trust in the Lord and do good" (Psalm 37:3). I closed my eyes and imagining myself as a child, being tucked into bed, hearing a mother's reassuring voice (and God's). In today's Old Testament passage, this indictment comes to God's people through the voice of the prophet Jeremiah: 'They have not...paid heed...they will not listen....This is the nation which does not listen to the voice of the Lord, its God, or take correction.' And I must ask, "Am I listening?" Or, as today's Gospel reading suggests, "Am I for or against Jesus?"...O Lord, our God, may we listen and pay heed to your voice!.

MISSION MESSAGE…The journey of the 40 days of Lent is to help change our hearts in preparation for the great feast of Easter-- the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. FAST: ON GOOD Friday. This means no meat and only one full meal that day for persons who have celebrated their 18th birthday until they reach their 60th birthday. ABSTINENCE: On ASH WEDNESDAY AND GOOD FRIDAYS of Lent we are asked to go without meat, as a very small sacrifice to remind us of the huge sacrifice Jesus made for us by giving up his life. Everyone who has celebrated their 14th birthday is to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays of Lent. ***Use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, praying the Stations of the Cross, reading the Scriptures or meditations, attendance at weekday Mass and other practices of penance, self discipline, and alms giving are encouraged throughout Lent.*** Blessings on all this Lent! Sister Bernadette

LENTON SERVICES…This month St. Labre employees have the opportunity to attend the Lenten Healing/Reconciliation service. We are pleased to have Bishop Michael Warfel preside at the service...When: Friday, March 26...***Time: 2:30 p.m...***Where: St. Labre Church...All St Labre employees are expected to attend. Wishing you blessings during this special season of Lent!..Sister Bernadette

ST LABRE 8th GRADE FUND RAISER…The St Labre 8th grade students will be stopping by the high school office, middle school office, elementary office, administration front desk, and the Y&FS front desk beginning at 3:30 today to leave several copies of the spring catalog. Take a look at the items available for Easter, Mother's Day, graduation, Father's Day, and miscellaneous items for those spring gardens. They will check back at those locations, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at the end of the day and take orders for those of you who are interested. It is a short sale so we get the items delivered before Easter break. Thank you for supporting the 8th grade students in their fund-rasing efforts. Call LaCee Small, 406-784-4567 for info.

SOLICITATIONS FOR THE MATH CONTEST…St. Labre is hosting the MCTM Southeastern Montana Math Contest this year. There will be six schools visiting the campus for the contest on the afternoon of March 12 from 2:30 to about 5:00 p.m. There is expected to be 156 participants from other schools attending. The students who are on break between tests will be in the Academy Gym, so it may be an opportunity for a group to have concessions open during that time. The cafeteria will have a nice supply of healthy snacks ready for the event. Any people or organization wishing to plan something or to simply help along please call Mrs. Boothe at 784-4564.

EMPLOYEE HEALTH SCREENINGS…The 2nd Annual Health Screening for employees will take place at St. Labre on March 17th and at Pretty Eagle and St. Charles on March 18th. The CMP is used as a broad screening tool to check for conditions such as diabetes, liver disease, and kidney disease. Employees will also complete an on-line Health Risk Assessment. The screening will be held March 17th and 18th. This is free for employees and all are encouraged take these tests every year so that a baseline can be established and reviewed for follow-up. The test results and health risk assessment are mailed directly to the employee's home mailing address to ensure confidentiality. Please plan or participating again this year! Call Rayetta Jordan at 406-784-4501 for further information.

FIVE TAX CHANGES FOR 2009…As you get ready to prepare your 2009 tax return, the Internal Revenue Service wants to make sure you have all the details about tax law changes that may impact your tax return. Here are the top five changes that may show up on your 2009 return. 1. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act - - ARRA provides several tax provisions that affect tax year 2009 individual tax returns due April 15, 2010. The recovery law provides tax incentives for first-time homebuyers, people who purchased new cars, those that made their homes more energy efficient, parents and students paying for college, and people who received unemployment compensation. 2. IRA Deduction Expanded - - You may be able to take an IRA deduction if you were covered by a retirement plan and your 2009 modified adjusted gross income is less than $65,000 or $109,000 if you are married filing a joint return. 3. Standard Deduction Increased for Most Taxpayers - - The 2009 basic standard deductions all increased. They are: **$11,400 for married couples filing a joint return and qualifying widows and widowers. **$5,700 for singles and married individuals filing separate returns. **$8,350 for heads of household. Taxpayers can now claim an additional standard deduction based on the state or local sales or excise taxes paid on the purchase of most new motor vehicles purchased after February 16, 2009. You can also increase your standard deduction by the state or local real estate taxes paid during the year or net disaster losses suffered from a federally declared disaster. 4. 2009 Standard Mileage Rates - - The standard mileage rates changed for 2009. The standard mileage rates for business use of a vehicle: **55 cents per mile. The standard mileage rates for the cost of operating a vehicle for medical reasons or a deductible move: **24 cents per mile. The standard mileage rate for using a car to provide services to charitable organizations remains at 14 cents per mile. 5.
